Sustainable Planning working to exchange PDC’s overhead wiring for underground infrastructure

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Central Playa del Carmen could see the mass of overhead powerlines soon disappear. The city is working on a project to remove the overhead wiring in exchange for an underground system.

Hernán González, the PDC Secretary of Sustainable Territorial Planning, says the city currently requires all new construction developers to install their infrastructure underground.

He said it is the beginning of the city’s plan to eliminate overhead wiring in Playa del Carmen. The goal, he says, is to gradually move toward a more orderly and aesthetically pleasing wiring system.

The entire city’s electrical system is above ground.

He explained that the local government is starting the process in the city’s center, including the tourist areas, in order to lay the groundwork for the project and encourage companies to begin migrating their infrastructure.

González emphasized that private companies providing services such as cable television, telephone and internet have shown a willingness to join this effort while acknowledging that the challenge is considerable since the entire city is served by overhead wires.

González says they are working to implement an intelligent strategy to move forward progressively and effectively to eliminate the overhead system for underground infrastructure.
