Progreso, Yucatan — A private boat carrying at least three people was completely destroyed by fire Saturday in Progreso. The boat, Lady Betriz, set sail late Saturday morning from the Port of Yucalpetén.
The at-sea fire was reported to Port officials around 1:00 p.m. by numerous people who saw the thick black smoke. Those on board were forced into the water due to the fast moving fire. The 44-foot-long vessel was seven kilometers from shore when the fire started.
Around two hours after leaving the Torre III Marina in the Port of Yucalpetén, the fire began. Navy personnel were accompanied by firefighters from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) to rescue the crew and put out the fire.
The situation was controlled an hour later. The vessel was left at sea and later towed back to port. Those on board were medically evaluated without reports of serious injuries.
