Strong winds overturn second PDC tourist boat off same beach

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — For the second time in as many weeks, a tourist boat has capsized near the same beach. On Friday morning, other vessels responded to the report of a boat that dumped its passengers into the sea.

A second vessel sank Friday morning off a PDC beach.

The boat took on water a short distance off Playa Coco in the Xaman Ha neighborhood of Playa del Carmen. High waves due to ongoing strong winds were the cause of the boat overturning.

Other nearby boaters were made aware of the incident before noon Friday. Five tourists on board were dumped into the sea, however, there were no injuries reported.

Municipal Police and Civil Protection arrived later to take note of the incident and speak with those on board.

On October 18, a similar incident off the same PDC beach also left a vessel overturned. A group heading out to sea did not make it far. Extremely rough seas due to a storm left the boat inoperable.

In that incident, the boat ended up taking on water and sinking. All on board made it to shore without injuries. That boat, 36-foot-long Xan-Ha, sank and had to be left until the weather improved for a rescue.
