State tourism council reports more than 7 million Cancun, Riviera Maya tourists since reopening

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — More than seven million tourists have visited the Cancun, Riviera Maya region since its reopening a year ago. The general director of the state tourism council said that seven million passengers have landed and that another six million are anticipated within the next six months.

Darío Flota Ocampo, general director of the Quintana Roo Promotion Council (CPTQ) reported that according to information from the CPTQ Strategic Planning Directorate, one year after the reopening, more than seven million passengers have already been received, which are thanks to the strategies, actions and measures carried out in the reactivation process.

The arrival of another six million in the next six months are expected before closing out the year.

In June 2020, the Cancun International Airport reported only 32 operations, of which 16 were arrivals, 12 national and four international. However, a year later, the airport, as of this week, is seeing 470 flights a day, of which 235 are arrivals, 82 national and 153 international.

Regarding hotel occupancy, in May of 2020, Riviera Maya held an average of 2.5 percent and in the Hotel Zone of Cancun and Puerto Morelos in the same period it was 5.69 percent. Scenarios are different now in May 2021, with reports of 53.3 percent and 58 percent, respectively.

The Certification in Protection and Sanitary Prevention in Tourist Facilities, developed by the Secretariat of Tourism of Quintana Roo, allowed companies to adapt health measures in addition to a State Epidemiological Light system that determines the capacity allowed per activity and segment.

The CPTQ implemented promotional strategies with the Mexican Caribbean campaign, The Best of Two Worlds, through which actions were developed for segments of vacation rentals, golf, wellness and business tourism.

There were also virtual seminars with travel agents and participation in meetings with representatives of airlines, tour operators and virtual fairs.

To date, Cancun receives passengers from 42 routes from the United States as well as air connectivity from Europe through Germany, France, Spain, Great Britain, Portugal, Russia, Poland and Turkey. Flights from Latin America include Belize, Bogotá, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, in addition to domestic flights.
