State police unit crashes leaving four injured

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — UPDATED: A State Police patrol crashed Thursday afternoon on Highway 307 along the Felipe Carrillo Puerto-Tulum section, leaving four officers injured.

Rescuers and firefighters arrived to use the jaws of life to open the truck’s doors to free the trapped police elements inside. The Director of the Police Academy, Valentín Contreras Mex, was one of the passengers. Three of the four were taken to the General Hospital of Felipe Carrillo Puerto with undisclosed injuries.

The vehicle left the roadway around noon and crashed about 50 kilometers north of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The police unit came to a stop after crashing into a metal CFE pole. The cause of the crash remains unknown.

UPDATE: A female police officer traveling in the truck at the time of the accident has died. Officials have said that the officer, who has not been named, died shortly after being admitted to Chetumal hospital. She died of injuries sustained during the accident. She was originally from Bacalar.
