Spirit delays start of Tulum flights from Florida

Tulum International Airport, Q.R. — Spirit airlines says they have been forced to delay their flights into Tulum due to engine issues. The airline, who uses Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines, have found impurities in the material of the engine’s high-pressure turbine disks, which can lead to premature cracks and failures.

Spirit had announced plans to offer flights into Tulum International from Florida starting March 28, however, that has been delayed. Spirit says they are working on providing alternate flight options for their travelers or refunding tickets for those who have already made the purchase.

The company made the announcement last week and says they are hoping to be able to offer an update in coming weeks. As of March 28, Spirit was set to begin direct flights from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Orlando (MCO) into the Tulum International Airport.

The airline, who also offers direct flights into Cancun from Ft. Lauderdale, Detroit, New Orleans and Philadelphia, have not said if these flights will also be affected.
