Six killed, five injured in Guerrero police ambush

Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero — Six police officers were killed and five left with injuries after the vehicles in which they were traveling were ambushed by members of a gang.

The shootings happened between the towns of El Gavilán and San Miguel Acuitlapan in the municipality of Taxco de Alarcón in the northern region in the state of Guerrero. Passersby notified Emergency 911 of the events that took place Sunday along the federal highway.

According to information from authorities, elements of the SSP “were carrying out crime prevention actions in this area of the state when armed civilians attacked uniformed personnel.” They added that “so far, collecting at the location AK-gun shells also an AR-15 firearm.”

At the ambush point, two policemen were shot and killed while in the bed of their police unit, while others were scattered in the vicinity. Five others were wounded and both police trucks were found riddled with bullets.

Although police did manage to return fire, six were killed before their attackers fled by vehicle. The wounded officers were transferred to the Adolfo Prieto General Hospital where a female police officer died.

Through a statement, the State Attorney General’s Office of Guerrero condemned the shooting, saying “authorities condemn the cunning aggression against the state police officers” and reports that “an operation has been implemented with the participation of state and federal corporations to locate the probable perpetrators, which according to first investigations, is the criminal group that operates in the area and which is led by Roberto Carlos Z.”
