Section of central PDC street shut due to sudden appearance of large sinkhole

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A section of a central road in Playa del Carmen has been closed. An area of Flamingos Street was shut Friday between 42 and 44 Avenues after a large sinkhole suddenly appeared.

Part of the public road began to buckle in an area that has gone soft due to the underground instability. For that reason, Civil Protection closed a section of the cobblestone road in the Zazil-Ha neighborhood Friday morning.

Municipal authorities are looking into the official cause of the collapse to determine a solution. In the meantime, the Municipality of Solidaridad is urging people to avoid the area.

“The Civil Protection Secretariat responded to a landslide on Flamingos Street, between 42nd and 44th Avenues, in the Zazil-Ha neighborhood. The area has been cordoned off to prevent risks, and investigations are being carried out to determine the causes.

“We ask the population to avoid the area and take alternate routes. We work for the safety and well-being of everyone in Solidaridad,” the Municipal Government said in a statement.
