Search for boat and three on board continues off coast of Mahahual

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — A search continues for a boat and three people who went missing Tuesday. The trio were reported missing after heading out in a boat from the island of Banco Chinchorro.

Banco Chinchorro is an island directly off the coast of Mahahual in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. The two men and one woman boarded a boat off Banco Chinchorro Tuesday. They were heading for the mainland to shop for supplies. They have not been seen since.

In a news briefing, the FGE said “the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo (FGE) reports that it opened an investigation after the disappearance of three fishermen on the high seas in the Banco Chinchorro area.

“It should be noted that the Attorney General’s Office, in coordination with the SEMAR and the Port Captain’s Office, carry out the search actions for these people.”

According to the report, the three people were sailing aboard Aurora de la Mañana. Those on board the vessel were reportedly bound for Mahahual to buy groceries, but they failed to arrive.

A waiting family member on the mainland said he assumed they delayed the trip due to bad weather.

Relatives went to authorities Friday in search of help to locate the missing couple and the worker who accompanied them. The missing have been identified as couple José Guadalupe Cetina Martín, Cristina Lizama Martín and a worker, José Morales Hernández.

The Secretary of the Navy and a group of fishermen have been searching since early Friday morning.
