Search continues for last fishermen of capsized Costa Maya vessel

Costa Maya, Q.R. — An air search has begun for the body of the remaining missing fisherman after a boat capsize Saturday. The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Quintana Roo spent the weekend air searching for the local man’s body in the Zaragoza canal.

The body of one of the two missing fishermen was found over the weekend, however, the body of the second missing man has not yet been located.

A total of five men were dumped into canal waters Saturday afternoon when strong winds overturned their fishing boat. Another nearby boat saw the overturned vessel and called for help.

A Navy search quickly located three fishermen alive. The body of one was recovered later that day, however, the body of the last missing man has yet to be found. The accident happened in Costa Maya near the coastal area of Xcalak.

In a brief statement, the SSC said “the SSC, Secretary of the Navy and the Rural Police carried out a coordinated operation in the search and rescue of five fishermen who were missing with their boat in the Zaragoza canal in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.

“So far three survivors, one deceased and one missing person have been confirmed.

“The search is carried out with the help of the Bell helicopter and a Navy boat, which stayed overnight in Xcalak. The operation will continue Tuesday morning due to visibility conditions. The Rural Police unit transferred the rescued people to Mahahual.”
