Royal Caribbean ship experiences power loss due to “small fire” at Costa Maya dock

Mahahual, Q.R. — A Royal Caribbean ship proceeded as scheduled after experiencing a slight setback at the port of Mahahual. On Tuesday, the ship arrived at the Costa Maya dock unable to allow passengers to disembark due to a loss of power.

The loss of power, according to a Royal Caribbean statement, was due to a small fire on the ship. The fire on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas caused a temporary power loss. Due to a lack of power, the ship’s gangplank could not be lowered.

In an official statement, the company explained “there was a fire and a brief loss of power, but all necessary safety procedures took place, and teams were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

“Backup power was the first to activate followed by the main power. The ship proceeded as scheduled.”

Power was out for around 20 minutes before the fire was out and backup power kicked in. Afterward, the ship’s gangway was opened and passengers were able to disembark.
