Riviera Maya traffic chaos after highway U-turn goes bad

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A highway U-turn gone bad left one compact car heavily damaged and a dump truck on its side. The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning approximately 10 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen.

The toppled dump truck created traffic congestion since the vehicle’s bed was left blocking one of the lanes. Drivers heading toward Tulum were slowed by the two vehicle accident.

Municipal Traffic officers opened an opposite lane to two-way to lighten the traffic load that had already backed up for several kilometers.

Paramedics treated both drivers, neither of whom were seriously injured.

According to preliminary information, the driver of the dump truck was heading toward Playa del Carmen when he allegedly made a highway U-turn. While in the middle of the highway, the truck made contact with an oncoming car.
