Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Residents who decided to burn their garbage rather than wait for the truck were responsible for a fire Sunday. Playa del Carmen firemen were left with the task of extinguishing an out-of-control garbage burn Sunday morning in the In House residential area.
Residents attempted to put out the flames themselves, however, they were no match for the region’s extremely dry, windy conditions.
By the time firemen arrived, the 4:00 a.m. fire had already spread to consume one vehicle. Flames were being fanned toward a home, which they were able to prevent from catching fire.
Authorities found the source of the blaze was garbage burning in a clandestine dump set by area residents. Police were called in but arrests were not made since they did not know who initially set the garbage on fire.
