Profepa orders investigation into shut Cozumel beach access road

Cozumel, Q.R. — Nearly a week after a public protest regarding a closed beach access road, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has ordered an investigation.

The Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa) made the request after the group of island residents filed a letter with the municipality questioning the closure of the road.

According to the September 23 document, the road near the house of the Presidencia de la República, was shut by private individuals on September 21.

A group of people protested the closure of the road last week, demanding free beach access as promised by both the state and federal governments in recent years. A meeting with Cozumel Mayor Juanita Alonso has also been requested.

On September 26, Profepa ordered the Quintana Roo delegation to inspect the closed road and follow up with an investigation.
