Bacalar, Q.R. — For affecting an area of more than 900 square meters of mangrove within a coastal lagoon, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) closed a project in the municipality of Bacalar.
According to a Profepa bulletin, personnel made an inspection to verify compliance with environmental legislation in the work that was taking place in Call Pulliin the Ejido Aarón Merino Fernández.
Inspectors arrived at the site to find that 960 square meters of mangrove had been illegally cleared of its vegetation by way of cutting and burning. The land was stripped to build a palapa. Federal authorities implemented the total temporary closure of all work and activities on the site.
