Prison riot in Colima leaves 8 dead and 7 injured

Colima, Q.R. — A Tuesday morning prison riot in Colima left eight dead and seven wounded. The riot was reported at 9:03 a.m. in two areas of the state prison after gunfire was heard.

A fight between two inmates, one of whom had a gun, was said to have begun the riot.

Governor Indira Vizcaíno reported the riot in the Center for Social Rehabilitation (Cereso) in Colima. He said it began around 9:00 a.m. and that by 10:00 a.m., the prion was under control with assistance from the State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the National Guard and the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena).

In the aftermath, authorities found eight dead inmates and seven injured, all of whom, were transferred to various hospitals. The gun used in the initial fight was seized along with several other “sharp weapons”.
