Police withdraw after PDC squatters refuse to leave land

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Residents of the irregular colony Las Torres in west Playa del Carmen thwarted an eviction operation carried out by police and National Guard. The operation to remove those illegally living on the land took place around noon Tuesday.

Authorities sent to the area were met with resistance by residents who gathered in numbers and refused to leave. At least one backhoe was brought in to begin tearing down solid brick structures being illegally built on the property.

At least two illegal buildings were knocked down. Police were at the scene for approximately two hours before leaving. The FGE (State Attorney General) closed the property even though numerous illegal shacks still stood and the illegal residents remained.
