Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: Playa del Carmen police are investigating the deaths of three taxi drivers found Friday. A citizen report Friday afternoon lead police to an area off the federal highway where the three bodies were found.

The three men are reported to be taxi drivers from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río union of Playa del Carmen. Their bodies were located around 4:00 p.m. off the highway on the border of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.

According to early information, all three were shot and found lying next to a message attributed to a criminal organization. Personnel from National Guard and the Mexican Army assisted in cordoning off the area with Municipal Police while evidence was gathered and the bodies removed.

Authorities are investigating a possible dispute between criminal groups. Sources say two of the men were reported missing July 16. The narco-banner placed at the scene alleges retaliation against several union officials.

UPDATE: All three men had current missing person reports issued for there whereabouts when their bodies were found Friday. All three had been reported missing from Playa del Carmen on July 16.
