Police investigate after gunmen open fire on Playa del Carmen restaurant

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Armed subjects opened fire on a restaurant in the city’s west side Sunday night. Although no injuries were reported, patrons were panicked and the restaurant’s walls left with bullet holes.

Police believe the shooting took place from across the busy roadway at the intersection of Constituent and 115 Avenues. Gunmen who shot at the eatery and were successful in penetrating windows that left bullets lodged in interior walls.

Those inside eating at the time of the shooting were forced to the ground. Everyone inside the dining area were told to crawl toward the back of the restaurant into the kitchen area for safety. Municipal police officers and paramedics arrived. Those inside the restaurant were assessed by medical personnel. There were no transfers to hospital.

Police found shell casings along the sidewalk on the opposite side of the road. The shooting is believed to be that of a political nature, however, an official investigation is under way.
