Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Police say they have “fully identified” the person responsible for throwing gas on a woman before lighting her on fire. Local authorities say they are in the process of making the arrest.
The statement, made Friday afternoon by the State Attorney General (FGE), happened inside a Playa del Carmen laundromat the day before. Nearby residents called 9-1-1 after hearing a woman’s screams Thursday afternoon from inside the public facility.
The attack happened at a laundromat on 4th Street and 40th Avenue where the woman worked. She was inside and alone when a man, reported to be her ex-boyfriend, doused her with gasoline before using a lighter to set her on fire.
She suffered second and third degree burns to approximately 45 percent of her body. She remains hospitalized in serious condition.
On Friday afternoon, the FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado) reported that after an investigation, the person responsible has been “fully identified” and will soon be arrested.
In their statement, they said “the alleged perpetrator of this crime has already been fully identified and will soon be arrested and placed at the disposal of the corresponding authority.
“This incident occurred yesterday afternoon in Playa del Carmen where the victim was attacked by her former partner in a store located on Calle 4, in Colonia Centro. The woman’s health condition is reported as serious with second and third degree burns.
“The Attorney General’s Office is actively working to seek justice for the victim, as attacks against women and vulnerable people will not be tolerated. More information will be provided on this case as the investigation progresses.”
