Playa del Carmen, Q. R. — Municipal police officers in Playa del Carmen have apprehended a man found attempting to sneak drugs into the prison. The 36-year-old man was taken into custody on Saturday after officers located bags of marijuana and cocaine.
Local media have reported the now-detained man was a prison guard, however, local authorities have said otherwise.
The SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) reported in a statement, “in relation to the information from various media outlets where it is reported that an element of this corporation tried to bring drugs into the Solidaridad Municipal Jail, the Secretariat of Citizen Security reports the person identified as Josué “N”, 36 years old, does not belong to, nor is he part of the ranks of this institution.”
Josué “N” is alleged to have been caught attempting to smuggle 1.2 kilos of marijuana and 40 doses of cocaine into the Playa del Carmen prison. A narcotics dog named Kimil assisted in locating the drugs.
The SSP of Solidaridad (Seguridad Pública Solidaridad) have also acknowledged the arrest, but without providing details. “The Municipal Police arrested a person who was trying to bring possible narcotics into the Municipal Detention Center.”
