Police detain 10 armed with machetes in Los Torres of Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad officers arrested 10 people after threatening a company worker who was clearing land. The incident happened Tuesday in a green area off Prolongación Avenida 115 of Playa del Carmen.

Police were sent in response to an emergency call after the group of armed men and women became a threat to the machine operator who was clearing the land. When responding officers requested they leave and allow the operator to work, they became aggressive.

Three officers and two workers were reported injured in the clash when the group reacted and refused to leave. In a statement, the Municipal Secretary of Citizen Security (SSCM) explained “the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat arrested 10 people for their alleged participation in the crime of injuries and whatever else, in a cleared area of the Prolongación Avenida 115.

“In response to an emergency call, SSCM elements located a group of people on a dirt road who showed a threatening attitude towards an individual. When they were asked to desist, they became aggressive with the officers, so they were stopped. Officers seized three machetes, a knife, a hammer, stones and a wooden log.

“Francisco “N”, 36 years old and Clara Luz “N”, 37 years old, both from Tabasco were arrested along with Luis “N”, 48, from Oaxaca, Ricardo “N”, 53, from Yucatan, Yolanda “N”, 40, Jaime “N”, 52, Victor “N”, 45, Bertha “N”, 46, Eliana “N”, 45 and Ángela “N”, 34.

“The latter six are originally from Chiapas. All 10 were arrested and placed at the disposal of the State Attorney General’s Office for the corresponding legal proceedings.”

Police have not said why they were threatening the worker or what relation, if any, they had to the land that was being cleared. The Secretary of Citizen Security of Solidaridad, Raúl Tassinari said uniformed officers will continue to maintain a presence in the area to ensure security.”
