Holbox, Q.R. — Dozens of construction workers were inspected during an island police security operation Tuesday. Police made the searches during the Safe Construction Site operation on Holbox.
Authorities visited construction sites and searched workers for drugs and other illegal items. Authorities reported that the operation is to prevent crimes such as extortion, drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms, problems that have been found on the island this year.
The one-day operation was lead by members of the Centurion Special Projects Group in Combating Extortion and Kidnapping. The police Canine Unit and Navy personnel also participated.
The search operations were carried out at three warehouses linked to construction projects, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen workplace safety and detect potential risks related to illicit activities.
According to official information, 39 preventive checks were carried out on workers, procedures that allowed verification of safety conditions and reinforcement of crime prevention efforts.
Authorities stated that these types of operations aim to inhibit criminal behavior, strengthen institutional presence, and create safer work environments for both workers and employers in the construction sector.
They also highlighted that the participation of the K9 Canine Unit contributes to the timely detection of illicit substances, weapons, or other objects that could represent a risk to the safety of the works and their employees.
The “Safe Construction” program is part of the prevention strategies implemented in different municipalities of Quintana Roo to strengthen surveillance in sectors considered priorities.
