Playacar beach sweep lands 36 in jail on drug charges

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — In an extensive raid that involved several levels of police, 36 people were taken to jail on drug-related charges. The Attorney General’s Office says on Saturday, the institutions that make up the State Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security in Quintana Roo carried out a joint operation in compliance with various orders of investigations related to the sale of drugs on the beaches of Riviera Maya.

In a press release, the FGE says the operation was carried out with elements of the Secretariat of National Defense, the Secretariat of the Armed Navy of Mexico, the National Guard, the Secretariat of State and Municipal Public Security and agents of the State Attorney General’s Office who captured 36 people.

The sweep took place in the area of Playacar where police secured 35 men and one woman on charges of drug dealing. During the arrests, one man tried to escape by fleeing into the sea, however, he was caught and apprehended.
