Playa del Carmen working toward its own C4 to avoid rerouting calls to Cancun’s C5

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The city of Playa del Carmen is moving toward having a Command Center upgrade. Currently, the municipality has a C2 security centre, which means all emergency calls are sent to the C5 in Cancun and dispatched from there.

All emergency calls made in Playa del Carmen are sent to the C5 Centre in Cancun and dispatched from there.

An upgrade to a C4 Center would mean the city would be able to answer its own calls and increase emergency response times. Orlando Muñoz, the President of the Commission for Citizen Security, Traffic, Civil Protection and Firefighters of Solidaridad, says Playa del Carmen is hoping to have its own Command, Control, Communication and Computing Center (C4) in 2025 as part of efforts to improve citizen security.

“We are hoping to have a local C4 so that calls do not go to the C5 in Cancun, however, it is a matter of will, not obligation,” said the official.

He says that advancement will depend on the will of the current authorities and the collaboration of various sectors, including the local business sector. He highlighted the importance of involving the business sector in this project by having them connect their video surveillance systems with the Citizen Security system.

“It is about reaching a consensus, about sharing that the cameras are a benefit. Many businessmen are in total agreement that these cameras could serve to provide us with more supervision over the criminal activities of some people,” he said.

9-1-1 in the Cancun C5 Centre dispatches authorities accordingly to respond to emergency calls.

By creating a local C4, Solidaridad seeks to strengthen real-time surveillance and rapid response to emergencies and criminal activities. This would also prevent calls for help from having to go through Cancun, speeding up assistance to Solidaridad citizens.

This project is part of a comprehensive strategy to improve security in the municipality, reinforcing the technological infrastructure and promoting collaboration between the government and business.
