Playa del Carmen restaurant evacuated in afternoon palapa fire

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad firemen were at the scene of an afternoon restaurant fire in central Playa del Carmen Friday. Firemen were requested after a section of the restaurant’s palapa caught fire.

The fire happened on the second floor of an establishment on Fifth Avenue and 12th Street. Responders evacuated the restaurant of customers and staff while firemen proceeded to extinguish the smoldering palapa.

There were no injuries reported. Civil Protection is still working with firemen to determine a cause for the afternoon fire. Solidaridad Civil Protection and Firemen provided a brief statement regarding the central Playa del Carmen fire.

“Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in a restaurant on 5th Avenue and 12th Street, managing to put out the fire. Diners and employees were also evacuated for safety.

“The events occurred Friday afternoon. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters and Civil Protection personnel carried out maneuvers to extinguish the fire that originated in a thatched roof. No injuries were reported,” Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos de Solidaridad said.
