Playa del Carmen issues first ankle bracelets to low offenders

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo reports that offenders waiting a judicial process in freedom will be outfitted with an ankle bracelet.

La Fiscalía General del Estado de Quintana Roo says that on Thursday, the first defendants facing criminal proceedings while in freedom were outfitted with an electronic tracking device. They say the move was made so the Precautionary Measures Unit will be able to monitor people who are free while in their legal process.

They report this precautionary measure allows the monitoring of people who wear the bracelet in order to comply with the judicial requirements decreed by a presiding judge and at the express request of the public prosecutor.

Three accused of drug related crimes have been the first bearers of this digital system in the municipality of Solidaridad. They must also periodically sign in before ministerial authorities.

La Fiscalía General del Estado de Quintana Roo explains that based on article 155, section XII of the National Code of Criminal Procedures and article 168, third paragraph of the National Law of Criminal Enforcement, only those who are not charged with a serious crime will be candidates for this security measure.
