Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Authorities have provided an update on an inmate who was found dead Sunday in the Playa del Carmen prison. According to Juan Novelo Zapata, the Secretary General of the City Council of Solidaridad, the now deceased was a 23-year-old male who had already served 64 percent of his sentence.
The unnamed prisoner was found hanging from a clothes line inside the Playa del Carmen Municipal Retention Center on Sunday. According to Novelo, after an FGE investigation, the death was ruled a suicide.
“It was found that there were no injuries or anything like that (to the body), it was just the situation of this boy, who at the time, had this determination. He had already served 64 percent of his sentence, and what some inmates commented on, was that he was tense,” Novelo explained.
