Playa del Carmen implementing roadside breath checks for holiday season

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Several modules of the roadside breathalyzer program will be installed in different parts of the municipality of Solidaridad for the holidays, says the head of public safety.

Gustavo García Utrera, head of la Comisión de Seguridad Pública for Playa del Carmen says that now with the start of Guadalupe-Reyes, and until the end of the year, the municipality will be implementing roadside breath checks.

He says the breath checks are meant to discourage citizens from getting behind the wheel after drinking.

“The program aims to raise awareness and safeguard the integrity of our citizens,” he says adding “They have to understand that what interests us most is their safety since during this time of year, we see an increase in consumption,” he explained.

“We are already preparing for the holidays. The city will work with the National Guard, Federal Police, State Police, Municipal Police and Civil Protection to take care of not only of the first cadre of the city, but also the rest of the municipality,” he added.

In most states of Mexico, including the state of Quintana Roo, the national limit is 0.8. A driver found to be over the national Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit of 0.8 can be detained for a minimum of 20 hours and a maximum of 36 hours.
