Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A total of five real estate properties between Playa del Carmen and Tulum were part of a seizure by the state’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in Combating Corruption.
One of the properties seized was a hotel in central Playa del Carmen. On Monday around 2:00 p.m., officers arrived at the Tortuga hotel where they proceeded to evict guests and staff before taking the owner into custody.
The seizure of the hotel was part of an investigation that included three judicial hearings involving 13 people, three from Playa del Carmen and 10 from Tulum. The seizure of the hotel came after the second of the three judicial hearings ordered the restitution of plots of nearby land, one of which the hotel was occupying.
Also included in the Monday seizure was Del Fierro, a 60,000 square meter ranch in the municipality of Tulum. The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office reported that the properties will be insured for as long as the investigations take. In 2019, the Tortuga hotel was also seized by the Prosecutor’s Office, but eventually returned to the owner.
