Playa del Carmen could be first to get police jet skis

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The city of Playa del Carmen could be the first in the state to have police jet skis. After the January Mamitas Beach Club shooting where two criminals escaped on a jet ski, authorities are looking into outfitting police with the watercraft.

Raúl Tassinari González, Secretaría of Seguridad Pública and Tránsito Municipal said security is being stepped up all around Playa del Carmen with the installation of Immediate Attention Centres.

These security Centers or Centros de Atención Inmediata will include personnel with ATVs and jet skis. Tassinari says the areas being focused on the most for now are Fifth Avenue and the city’s beach areas.

In his weekly municipal report, he said having jet skis would allow police to pursue criminals like those involved in the recent Mamitas Beach Club shooting that left its manager dead.

He explained that the idea so far is to create these Immediate Attention Centers, which will consist of tents with equipped personnel from different police and armed forces.

These points will be distributed between the Sandos and Vidanta hotels along Riviera Maya beaches. They will also be set up on Fifth Avenue, he said. They will also all be connected to the C5 Command Centre in Cancun.

Last month when announcing one arrest in the Mamitas beach shooting, State Attorney General Óscar Montes de Oca Rosales mentioned the possibility of jet skis for police. There have also been incidences in Cancun where criminals have successfully escaped using jet skis.
