Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Approximately 390 kilos of cocaine was seized Sunday after the illegal landing of a plane on a highway in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
The Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) discovered the illegal aircraft in state airspace coming from South America. The plane, which used a section of the Mérida-Chetumal federal highway as a runway, was already on fire when it was located by military personnel.
Authorities shut the highway for the unexpected 7:50 a.m. landing near the junction of Chunhuhub while they dealt with the burning plane. Firemen were on scene to douse what was left, however, the aircraft was reduced to a metal heap.
The Ministry of National Defense reports that although there were no arrests, a red pickup truck with approximately 390 kilos of cocaine was secured and remains in their custody.
