Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Workers that collect garbage from the tourists areas of Playa del Carmen have come to an agreement after a strike. The one day strike began when workers claimed no severance pay.
Garbage collecting company Electrotaller Industrial y Comercial El Rural have agreed to make the overdue payments in two installments. The first half of in mid-September and the second at the end of the September.
The severance payments are part of the company’s contract with the current administration of Solidaridad, which is about to change hands.
Cecilio Puc Sansores, the General Secretary of the Solidaridad City Council, says the agreement was formalized hours after the workers began their protest. Sansores said 50 percent of their severance pay will be made on September 15 and the second half will be issued before the 30th of that same month.
The garbage collection company is subcontracted by the administration of Lili Campos for collection in the tourist areas and the first square of the city of Playa del Carmen. The current administration is about to come to an end with a new mayor taking over within the next few weeks.
