Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Local taxi drivers could be charging more in September says the head of the local union. Luis Herrera Quiam, the Secretary General for the Sindicato de Taxistas Lázaro Cárdenas del Río says rate hikes could be implemented as soon as this Fall.
He says the Union is anticipating a rate hike by the end of the year. If not in September, then in December. “The probable date could be September, although it could be delayed until December,” said the taxi union leader.
The increase in rates would apply to both their taxi and public combi services. Quiam says as soon as their budget is approved, residents will be informed of any price hikes.
“The budget, as soon as it is approved, will be shared with the citizens. It will not be a substantial increase,” he added explaining that it will be a percentage increase.
Any approved rate increases, he said, will go toward improving vehicles and services. Quiam mentioned that it has been several years since they’ve had an increase in their transport rates around the city of Playa del Carmen.
Requests for rate increases must be submitted to, and subsequently approved by, the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute.
