Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A group of high school students are alleged responsible for a palapa fire that completely consumed the structure. The fire happened under a grass topped shade structure in a public park Thursday.
A report of the fire was made to the C5, who in turn sent Solidaridad firemen to the Palmas 1 subdivision of the city. The palapa, which is part of an current public park remodeling project, was completely destroyed.
Jorge Vázquez Oropeza, the Secretary of Solidaridad Civil Protection, reported the fire was started by a group of high school students playing with firecrackers under the palapa.
One of the lit firecrackers made contact with the dry grass that quickly ignited into flames. The entire structure was burned. Witnesses said the kids ran once the palapa caught fire.
It is the fourth time a similar situation ended with a palapa fire around the state in recent weeks.
In a briefing, the SPC (Secretaría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos de Solidaridad) reported “elements of the Fire Department and the Operational Department responded to a report from C5 about a fire in a palapa in Col. Palmas 1, which was completely consumed. No injuries reported.”
