PDC judge hands down fine and animal shelter community service to dog abuser

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipality of Solidaridad has issued its first fine for animal abuse. On Tuesday, Mayor Lili Campos announced the fine and sentencing for the mistreatment of a dog.

The city’s Secretary of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) forwarded a video that was submitted by a citizen of a dog being mistreated by its owner. Police escorted city officials to the home where the dog owner attempted to escape.

The unidentified man was captured and has since been before a Civic Judge who fined him 6,244 pesos and sentenced him to community service in the city’s animal shelter.

Municipal Secretary María de Lourdes Várguez Ocampo is asking people to report animal abuse.
“It is important to ask the population not to normalize the abuse, to give us notice through 911 or to our telephone numbers of the Secretariat so that we act in a timely manner,” she said in a statement.
