Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Work to repair the federal highway in Solidaridad has begun. On Monday, the National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) began repairs to the north section of the Playa del Carmen highway.
The work will see the entire median of the 307 highway restored after trees and central lighting were removed to make way for Maya Train tracks. Since the Maya Train route was changed, the damage will be repaired and other improvements made.
Lili Campos, the mayor of Solidaridad, said that repairs will include “lighting infrastructure, signage, medians and reforestation of the federal highway.” She said the improvement projects will be carried out simultaneously with restoration of the Maya Train damage.
Aside from repairing Maya Train damage, the Fonatur highway project for Solidaridad will also include the repair of a sinkhole at kilometer 265 between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal, as well as the restoration of concrete slabs, repaving, drainage work, signage, patching and replacement of highway guardrails.
Work will be done along a one-kilometer stretch of highway between the Palladium hotel and Puerto Aventuras, the repair of the sinkhole between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal, road work along 5.8 kilometers between Paamul and Sac-Tun, 0.4 kilometers of repairs in front of the Mayan Center of Playa del Carmen and 1.1 kilometers of work at the Weston College.
Once the civil projects are complete, the reforestation stage of federal 307 highway will begin. Campos reported that with public and private resources, lighting of the Chemuyil-Puerto Morelos section of highway will also be improved, which is set for completion October 5.
