Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — PDC firemen were able to save surrounding buildings after a restaurant’s palapa caught fire Friday. Firefighters were on location at Los Olvidados in the city center Friday evening after patrolling police officers noticed the smoldering rooftop.

Municipal officers requested the assistance of city firemen when they noticed the dense smoke and confirmed the burning rooftop. The fire was seen by officers in a parking lot behind the restaurant along 10th Avenue. By the time firemen were on scene, the smolder had turned into shooting flames.
Six people inside the establishment who had not yet noticed the smoldering rooftop were evacuated by police. Playa del Carmen firemen responded quickly and were able to bring the fire under control, saving the surrounding buildings. The grass palapa roof of the restaurant was devoured by the fire.
PDC Civil Protection personnel arrived to start an investigation. A cause for the fire is not yet known.
