Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A company passenger van hit a pedestrian in Playa del Carmen Wednesday night, killing him. The accident happened on Boulevard Playa del Carmen near Avenida 28 de Julio where a man was hit by the van.
Motorists who witnessed the hit called Emergency 911, requesting assistance after the victim remained laying in the middle of the highway. Police and medical personnel responded to the 7:40 p.m. accident, arriving to find the man dead.
Witnesses told police that the man crossed the busy highway without looking or taking any precautions.
Municipal transit elements arrived to manually direct the traffic lights at the junction of Boulevard 28 de Julio, while police dealt with the scene. The area was completely closed while police investigated and the medical examiner arrived to remove the body.
The driver of the company van was taken into custody. Reports say the passenger van was carrying tourists at the time of the accident. Those inside had to wait until another vehicle arrived to transport them.
