Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: Heavy rain in Playa del Carmen Wednesday is being factored into a two vehicle highway accident. Wednesday morning, the SSC (Seguridad Ciudadana Solidaridad) reported briefly on the two vehicle accident at the southern end of the city.
The accident happened around 10:00 a.m. on the federal highway near the Toyota dealership. A passenger van transporting Riviera Maya tourists collided with a passenger bus also transporting tourists.
The driver of the van crashed through the side of the bus and into a luggage compartment. Several tourists from inside the van were forced to crawl out the back hatch. Some were able to grab their luggage in the process. Motorists slowed to video the chaos as passengers were seen exiting both vehicles and loitering in the center of the busy highway.
The bus came to a stop across the federal highway (Playa del Carmen Boulevard), completely blocking at least one lane. The SSC warned of slowed traffic in the area due to the two vehicle accident. Police have not commented on the number of injured, if any or an official cause for the mid-morning crash.
UPDATE December 12: Police and paramedics responding to the accident confirmed two injured. Two people traveling in the front section of the passenger van were transferred to hospital with undisclosed injuries. There were no reports of injured passengers on the bus. The accident was reportedly caused by a bad highway U-turn by one of the involved vehicles.
