Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An overturned crane left a Playa del Carmen highway completely shut for more than two hours. The 8:00 a.m. incident happened when the piece of heavy machinery was being transported on the back of a flatbed.
During transport, the crane toppled onto the highway blocking both lanes and breaking the pavement underneath. The crane was being transported north toward Cancun at the time of the incident.
Transit officials were called to the scene near a Riviera Maya hotel Saturday morning. By the time they arrived, early morning weekend traffic was already a mess. Additional Transit officials were required to redirect traffic toward Cancun in the opposite lane.
Authorities were at the scene for more than two hours, requiring three heavy duty tow trucks to work together to upright the felled crane. There were no injuries reported in the early morning mishap.
