“The immediate reaction of our firefighters prevented a house from burning completely, after extinguishing the flames of a palapa on the second floor on 44th Street in the El Pedregal neighborhood,” Solidaridad Civil Protection reported regarding the Tuesday fire.

Since their report, negligence in waste management is being blamed for the afternoon blaze that consumed part of a home. According to reports, the unauthorized burning of garbage is what caused the dry grass on a neighboring house to catch.

The fire happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. when an adjoining neighbor was attempting to rid of waste including leaves and combustible material. Strong wind gusts fueled the fire and allegedly blew sparks into a neighboring yard, catching the second floor palapa on fire.

The top floor of the home was consumed by the fire, however, firemen were able to save the main floor. Authorities are investigating and determining possible charges.
