One killed, one unaccounted for in 7-semi pileup

Saltillo, Coahuila — A seven vehicle accident near the city of Saltillo has left at least one dead and one unaccounted for. The accident was reported at 4:20 a.m. when a chain reaction caused seven semis to collide and catch fire the México-Piedras Negras highway.

Authorities have said that one driver died after becoming trapped inside his burning unit, while a second driver remains unaccounted for.

The accident was allegedly caused when the driver of one semi trailer lost control. It was the driver of that semi that died from being trapped inside his cab. Six other semis were involved in the highway crash. All vehicles involved were completely consumed by flames.

Authorities have not yet been able to identify all the names of the companies to which the trailers belonged since they were all burned in their entirety. The extensive fire was seen for kilometers and burned for several hours.

An official cause of the accident is still unknown. The highway was shut for several hours while emergency personnel dealt with the scene.
