Holbox, Q.R. — A dolphin was found dead on a beach of Holbox Wednesday after locals spotted a stranded pod. The arrival of the pod had both residents and tourists trying to capture the unusual moment.
They were located early Wednesday morning by fishermen who were heading out to sea. It was on Wednesday afternoon when one member of the mammal family was found deceased on a sandy beach area in the northern part of the island.
Local authorities were notified of the pod being stranded in shallow waters. Holbox mayor Manuel Escamilla García said that during the early morning of Wednesday, fishermen gave notice of this massive stranding, so several of them began to help them reach deeper water.
While they were successful, one dolphin died. Environmental personnel from the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) will be making tours to search for the pod to continue monitoring.
