Puerto Progreso, Yucatan — An element of the Municipal Police who was attacked inside a surveillance booth Wednesday morning has died. According to preliminary data provided by municipal authorities, the agent was at a surveillance booth located in the Parque Vicente Guerrero of Puerto Progreso when he was attacked with a knife around 3:00 a.m.
Witnesses say the police officer was attacked around the neck by several people after which, he ran outside for help, but collapsed and died on the sidewalk. Municipal president Julián Zacarías Curi, along with the Ministry of Public Security, confirmed the death and announced that investigations have begun.
Municipal and State Police, as well as the State Attorney General, attended the murder scene to initiate investigations. Progreso is located 36 kilometres north of Mérida.
