Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum says a direct social media attack was launched against her over a four day period. After a social media study, the Infodemia initiative detected more than 1.3 million negative mentions through hashtags.
Current President Sheinbaum and former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador were the primary targets.

During the social media study, they found that over four days on X, around 20 million pesos had been spent on a dirty campaign carried out by 147,200 bot -type accounts that generated 1,366,530 mentions.
The mentions were negative nationally trending tags against the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, as well as former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Infodemia coordinator Miguel Elorza Vásquez said Tuesday.
Elorza Vásquez reported that between March 12 and 17, hashtags #NarcoExPresidenteAMLO, #NarcoPresidentaClaudia and #LutoNacional were activated on social media, highlighting the use of fake accounts.

He explained that the conversation surrounding the Teuchitlán case has been manipulated by the use of bots to generate a non-organic narrative to attack the President and the former president.
More than 87,000 bot accounts had been detected generating 973,500 publications, including retweets, posts and replies to tweets of content from 2024.
