Holbox, Q.R. — Civil Protection has reported no injuries in a restaurant fire on the island of Holbox. Late Monday morning, the grass palapa of a pizzeria caught fire and quickly began to burn. The extensive smoke kept people at bay who were trying to extinguish the second story area of grass that was burning.
According to Quintana Roo Civil Protection, the fire was considered under control shortly after 1:00 p.m. and was put out without reports of any injuries. The state agency reported “This morning we received a report of a fire in a pizzeria on Holbox Island, in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.
“It is reported that personnel of State and Municipal Civil Protection, Firefighters and Quintana Roo Police were there and reported the situation as controlled with no injuries.”
The fire reportedly broke out late Monday morning in the restaurant’s rooftop palapa on its second level. The grass, which was wet from heavy recent rains, smoldered and produced thick masses of smoke before eventually breaking into flames.
Both levels of the restaurant suffered extensive smoke and water damage, while the palapa roof was eventually destroyed by fire. Emergency personnel are continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze. An estimate in damages has yet to be determined.
