Guerrero, Mexico — Nine tourists were killed early Wednesday after the van they were riding in was run over by a semi. The accident happened along a section of the Del Sol highway in the coastal state of Guerrero.
The passenger van was carrying a family of national tourists who had left Acapulco bound for the state of Hidalgo when they were hit by the semi.
The highway was shut for more than four hours while emergency teams sorted out the twisted metal vehicles and the deceased.
According to preliminary information, brakes on the semi unit failed, causing it to hit the van at full highway speed. The passenger van was dragged by the semi for nearly 100 meters before coming to a stop.
Civil Protection Gurrero have said that all nine deceased were from the same family. They include four adult women, four minors and one adult man. Five were found dead on scene. The others died in hospital.
The driver of the semi was arrested at the scene. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Guerrero has not commented on possible charges.
