Costa Maya, Q.R. — A boat from Florida ran aground Monday on a coral formation in the vicinity of Cayo Culebra, a small uninhabited island in the middle of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
The two crew members on board were rescued by Navy personnel. According to the Secretary of the Navy, two boats and an aircraft were sent in search of the small vessel which had sailed from Florida.
Once the boat was located and intercepted, the two Americans on board were transferred to the Advanced Naval Station in Puerto Aventuras. The Secretary of the Navy did not report on damage, if any, to the coral reef system.
