National tourist drowns off central Playa del Carmen beach

Playa del Carmen, Q. R. — A tourist to Playa del Carmen drowned Saturday off a central city beach. The woman, who was around 50, died after being swept away by currents.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday off the 28th Street beach area of central Playa del Carmen.

Lifeguards at Playa Mamitas pulled her from the water and tried to revive her on the beach, but she did not respond. She was rushed to hospital but was pronounced upon arrival.

The woman, who was a Mexican national, had arrived in Playa del Carmen several days before.
